Dan Marino license plate could be coming to Florida

When a Dolphins specialty tag just isn't enough …

Dolphins supporters in Florida have long been able to express their fandom via specialty license plates emblazoned with the team's logo. But what if your love for the greatest player in Dolphins history — and a cause close to his heart — supersedes your love for the team itself?

State Sen. Joe Abruzzo may have an answer for you, in the form of a Dan Marino specialty tag.

Abruzzo, a Democrat from Boynton Beach, introduced HB 839 in the Florida legislature earlier this week. If approved, it would establish a new license plate promoting and benefitting the Dan Marino Foundation, which was established in 1992 by the Hall of Fame quarterback after his son Michael was diagnosed with autism.

The foundation is dedicated to assisting young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The centerpiece of the effort is Marino Campus, which provides post-secondary training and certificate programs. "Marino Campus" would appear on the proposed Florida tags, according to the text of the bill.

The state already offers 125 specialty tags, and Floridapolitics.com notes the Marino plate isn't the only potential new addition for 2017. Legislators also will consider a measure to issue a tag honoring President Ronald Reagan.
