Wilander still in hospital

01/18/2012 12:12:30 AM

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander remains in hospital in Melbourne after lacerating a kidney in a fall over the weekend.

Wilander, 47, was in Melbourne for the Australian Open to commentate on the year's first Grand Slam for Eurosport and suffered a fall in his apartment which caused him to suffer internal bleeding.

He has been hospitalised and the bleeding from a kidney was only stopped on Tuesday morning.

A statement from his company, Wilander on Wheels, confirmed that the Swede faced a long period of recovery.

"He will be out of commission for a while. We will keep you updated on his condition if things change. Thanks for everyone's concerns and enjoy the Open," the statement said.

Wilander won the Australian Open three times in the 1980s and became a popular player among Australian fans. He also won the French Open three times and the Us Open once.
