Katie O'Brien completed a quartet of British exits but not before putting up a battling performance against Alona Bondarenko.
O'Brien had a tough task against 28th seed Bondarenko and in the end it proved too much as she went down 6-3 6-7 (10-12) 6-4.
Nadia Petrova, the 12th seed from Russia, progressed with a 6-4 6-3 win over Tatjana Malek of Germany, while her compatriot Vera Zvonareva, seeded 21, defeated Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-4 6-1.
Russian 26th seed Alisa Kleybanova also advanced, although there were defeats for 34th-seeded Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, who lost 6-3 6-4 to Israel's Shahar Peer.
Maria Kirilenko added to the healthy Russian contingent in round two as the 27th seed rallied from a set down to see off Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele 2-6 6-4 7-5, while 30th-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan was a 6-1 6-4 winner over Slovenia's Polona Hercog.
