Tsonga blitzes Mahut

Tsonga serve too much for Mahut

02/22/2012 07:04:20 PM

Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eased past Nicolas Mahut at the Open 13 in Marseille on Wednesday, making his way into the quarter-finals.

The world number six breezed past Mahut 6-3 6-2 in just 55 minutes to set up a clash with Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the last eight.

Tsonga was on top in the all-French affair from the outset, breaking his compatriot in his first service game to race to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

Mahut failed to register a single break point against Tsonga's serve, and won a measly five return points for the entire match.

After serving out the first set, Tsonga quickly broke again at the start of the second, and Mahut put up little resistance as he was bundled out of the tournament.

Roger-Vasselin was just as comfortable in his second round outing, thrashing Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-3 6-0.

Meanwhile, local Michael Llodra was forced into a battle before overcoming Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3).

Llodra sent down 12 aces for the match and was unable to break serve, but he showed his class in the tie-breakers.

The 31-year-old goes on to face sixth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.

The Ukrainian was not at his best in a 2-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 win over Czech Lukas Rosol in one hour and 39 minutes.

Dolgopolov converted just one of six break-point chances, but lost just three points when serving in the deciding set.
