Australians Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione were both eliminated in the first round of the ATP Hall of Fame tournament on Rhode Island on Wednesday.
Guccione lost his first round match 7-6, 6-4 to Ukrainian Sergei Bubka junior, the son of legendary pole vault world record holder Sergei Bubka.
A record heat wave on the US east coast caused forced Ball to retire hurt after leading 1-0 in the final set against Argentina's Brian Dabul.
The United States' Sam Querrey saw off Jesse Levine 6-3 6-3, while Mardy Fish won another all-American tie against Michael Russell 6-1 6-2.
Second seeded Colombian Santiago Giraldo saw off Austrian qualifier Alexander Peya 7-6 (7-1) 1-6 6-4, while Rajeev Ram, Brian Dabul, Sergei Bubka, Raven Klaasen, Somdev Devvarman and Denis Kudla also booked their places in the second round.
