Australian Anastasia Rodionova won the first set before falling in three to Germany's Tatjana Malek in the first round of the Swedish Open on Monday.
Rodionova, who reached the third round at Wimbledon and Roland Garros this year, made a good start before Malek rebounded strongly to claim victory 5-7 6-3 6-1.
Kaia Kanepi, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon, came back to earth as she was dumped out by fifth seed Arantxa Parra Santonja.
Despite being unseeded here, Kanepi is ranked 14 places above her opponent following her exploits last week, which were ended when she threw away five match points in losing to Petra Kvitova.
But she could not keep pace with the Spaniard, who claimed a 6-4 7-5 win.
Second seed Aravane Rezai of France continued her good recent form with a 6-4 6-2 win over Lilia Osterloh.
Rezai beat some big names, including Justine Henin and Venus Williams, to win the Madrid Open and she was too good for her American opponent on Monday.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Akgul Amanmuradova, Karolina Sprem and Renata Voracova.
Meanwhile, Chinese fifth seed Shuai Peng was never troubled as she reached the second round of the GDF Suez Grand Prix in Budapest.
The world No.44 dropped just five points on her serve as she claimed a one-sided first set 6-1 against 16-year-old Croatian Silvia Njiric, and she added the second set 6-3 to win in 71 minutes.
Russia's Anna Chakvetadze had things even more her own way against Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva, winning 6-2 6-0 in just 62 minutes.
The eight games of the first set brought about six breaks of serve, four of them to Chakvetadze, and she wrapped up the easiest of wins as Koryttseva failed to hold serve at any stage.
Home favourite Greta Arn was pushed to three sets by Darya Kustova of Belarus. Kustova won the first set 6-3 but the Hungarian responded in decisive fashion by dropping only nine points in the second set en route to a 3-6 6-0 6-3 win.
Colombia's Catalina Castano was a 6-0 6-3 winner over Kristina Kucova, aided by seven double faults from the Slovakian.
