Stosur marches on

Stosur marches on

Australian Samantha Stosur has cruised into the third round of the US Open with a comfortable straight sets win over compatriot Anastasia Rodionova on Wednesday.

Stosur, seeded five, was far too strong for the world No.64 as he wrapped up the 6-1 6-4 victory in just over an hour.

The French Open finalist asserted her dominance from the outset with a break in the fourth game before breaking again in sixth game to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

She served out the set with ease and carried her momentum into the second with a break in the opening game.

Rodionova kept fighting and forced Stosur to serve out the match, which she comfortably did to achieve her best performance at Flushing Meadows.

Next up for Stosur is a third-round meeting with unseeded Italian Sara Errani after she ended 28th seed Alisa Kleybanova's tournament earlier of day three.

Rising star Sally Peers was taught a lesson by second seed Kim Clijsters in the first match of the night session.

Peers started brightly and broke Clijsters twice in the early stages of the opening set, but she was unable to hold her serve as the defending champion raced through the first set in just 32 minutes.

Peers finally held serve in the second set but it was the game she won as Clijsters sealed the 6-2 6-1 victory in under an hour.

In the men's draw, Peter Luczak was bundled out in four sets by Ukrainian Sergiv Stakhovsky 6-7 (8-10) 7-5 6-4 6-2.

Luczak edged a tight opening set in a tirebreak, but then lost a marathon second set that went for 78 minutes before Stakhovsky, winner at New Haven last week, cruised through the last two sets.

Carsten Ball is sole Australian left in the men's draw with his next match against 21st Albert Montanes on Thursday.
