Defending champions Spain and 2011 runners-up Argentina both wrapped up their Davis Cup world group ties.

Five-time champions Spain rounded out a 3-0 rout of Kazakhstan in Oviedo as Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez combined in the doubles to see off Evgeny Korolev and Yuri Schukin 6-2 6-3 6-1.

Argentine pair David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank came from two sets down to defeat Germany's Tommy Haas and Philipp Petzschner 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 to earn the South Americans a spot in the quarter-finals.

The United States completed a stunning Cup boilover when they defeated a Roger Federer-led Switzerland 3-0 in Fribourg.

After John Isner stunned Federer in the singles to give the USA a 2-0 lead, other singles victor Mardy Fish and doubles specialist Mike Bryan combined to defeat an out-of-sorts Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3.

The Czech Republic also took an unassailable 3-0 lead in their tie with Italy, after Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek defeated Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Russia kept alive their slim hopes of turning around their tie with Austria by winning the doubles match to trail 2-1.

Veteran Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny saw off Austrians Alexander Peya and Oliver Marach 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 3-6 6-4 in a match lasting four hours and 45 minutes.

Sweden also kept alive their chances of causing an upset over 2010 champions Serbia, with a marathon victory to doubles pair Johan Brunstom and Robert Lindstedt.

The Swedes claimed a 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (3-7) 10-8 win over Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic in just over four hours to keep the tie alive.

Croatia took the lead for the first time in their tie with Japan, going ahead 2-1 as Ivan Dodig and Ivo Karlovic claimed the doubles clash in four sets.

Karlovic and Dodig beat Tatsuma Ito and Yuichi Sugita 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3 to take control of their clash in Japan.
