Sharapova untroubled

Top seed Maria Sharapova has cruised into the quarter-finals of the Open GDF Suez in Paris on Wednesday.

The world number three was simply too good for Chanelle Scheepers, beating the South African 6-3 6-1.

The match was Sharapova's first of the tournament after she received a bye in the first round.

Sixth seed Julia Goerges was similarly untroubled making her way into the last eight, breezing past Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-1 6-4 in just over an hour.

In the day's first round matches, seventh seed Roberta Vinci eased past Romania Simona Halep 6-4 6-4.

The Italian was able to make inroads on Halep's serve, converting four of seven break point chances in her win.

In an upset, eight seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was sent packing after suffering a shock 2-6 6-3 6-3 loss to local hope Pauline Parmentier.

The Frenchwoman, ranked 62 in the world, took her chances in the deciding set while Spain's Medina Garrigues failed to do so.

Belgian Yanina Wickmayer was on court for less than 30 minutes, winning the first set against Jill Craybas 6-1 before the American retired.

Monica Niculescu of Romania battled past Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1 4-6 6-4, while Czech Klara Zakopalova disposed of Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3 6-1.

American Christina McHale overcame countrywoman and lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-5 and qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands, also of the United States, brushed past German Kristina Barrois 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
