Defending champion Serena Williams has been practising her curtsy as well as her serve ahead of the Queen's visit to Wimbledon.

The monarch is due to make her first trip to the All England Club since her silver jubilee in 1977, the year Britain's Virginia Wade lifted the women's title.

She will make her appearance on Thursday, when Williams will be playing in the second round providing she overcomes Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito in her opening test.

"Yeah, I found out that she was coming to town," said the three-time winner.

"I thought, 'Wow, this is really, really cool'."

"She hasn't been to this tournament in just forever. I thought, 'Wow, I've just got to make sure I'm here on Thursday'."

"I'll be playing on Thursday, so I don't know how that's going to work out. Hopefully I have a chance to meet her."

"I've been working on my curtsy. It's a little extreme, so I'm going to have to tone it down. I have a lot of arm movement."

"Actually, I was practising it this morning. I get really low. But we'll see. I hope we'll have a chance to do that."

Williams spent Saturday evening taking in the American rock band Green Day's Wembley Stadium show.

"I did a little cardio there, I was jumping around a little bit," she said. "It was amazing. Everyone knows I'm a massive Green Day fan."

It was put to her that the decibel levels at Wembley would have prepared her for the clash with 17-year-old Larcher De Brito, who is far better known for her loud on-court grunting than her tennis.

But Williams is determined just to focus on her own game, rather than what happens on the other side of the net.

"I do the best I can, play the best I can. There's nothing else I can do," she said.

Since beating her sister, Venus, in last year's final, Williams has regained the world No.1 ranking, which for a while was in the possession of Russian Dinara Safina, who has pulled out of Wimbledon due to injury this year and in any case slumped so far in the last 12 months she was only due to seeded 20th.

Williams has reasserted herself as the player to beat and starts her Wimbledon campaign as the title favourite, ahead of her five-time champion sister.

There are distractions though and, aside from Green Day and the Queen, the World Cup is occupying her mind.

An ardent supporter of the United States national team, she was heartbroken when Maurice Edu was denied a winning goal against Slovenia on Friday, when a questionable refereeing decision meant Bob Bradley's side had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

"My heart skipped several beats," she said. "I'm surprised I'm here."

"There's no way we shouldn't have won that match. It was really, really upsetting."

"A tie is okay, but we totally got that win. I was really upset about that. But, you know, review."

Wimbledon employs technology to determine questionable calls, but FIFA's reluctance to embrace such technology meant there was no chance to appeal for the Americans.

"I was screaming and jumping," Williams said.

"Then it didn't count as a goal. I was like, 'No way, what's going on?'."

"It was outrageous. It was totally outrageous."

"But I'm sure the other country didn't think it was outrageous."

Such passion for winning is what has turned the sisters into the champions they
