Top-seeded Sam Querrey was a shock second round loser at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport on Wednesday, losing to little known Jamaican Dustin Brown.
Querrey, who was runner-up at this event last year, fell 6-4 6-3 to Brown, while the tournament's second seed also bowed out.
Colombian Santiago Giraldo became British world No.552 Richard Bloomfield's latest victim as he won in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to set up a quarter-final with wildcard Richard Harrison.
No.5 seed Mardy Fish had no such problems, seeing off Somdev Dewarman 6-2 6-0, while Nicolas Mahut, playing his first tournament since losing to John Isner at Wimbledon in the longest match in history, crashed out 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to Frank Dancevic.
Defending champion Rajeev Ram was beaten 5-7 6-1 7-6 (7-3) by Raven Klaasen while Brian Dabul and Olivier Rochus are also through to the last eight.
In doubles action, Australians Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione knocked out top seeds Querrey and Fish 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (11-9) 13-11 in an epic first round encounter.
