Indian doubles legend Leander Paes has completed a career Grand Slam after combining with Radek Stepanek to win the Australian Open on Saturday night.
Paes and Czech Stepanek defeated Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 in 84 minutes to deny the American twins a record-breaking 12th Grand Slam title.
The success was 38-year-old Paes' seventh major doubles title but first in Melbourne following three previous finals appearances.
He has now won all four Grand Slam doubles titles and has 13 to his name thanks to six mixed doubles titles.
All four players had little trouble holding serve early on with both teams offering up just a single break point chance as the set headed to an inevitable tiebreaker.
The first two points when against the serve in the tiebreaker, but then it was all Paes and Stepanek as they reeled off six straight points to take the opening set.
They carried that momentum into the second with an early break of Bob Bryan's serve to take contrl of the match.
As the finish line approached, the Bryan brothers pushed hard to break back and had a chance only to watch Paes pull off a remarkable volley off his toes.
After they let that chance slip, Mike Bryan failed to hold his serve with a double fault on the second match points giving Paes and Stepanek the title.
Paes will get the chance to add another Grand Slam title to his resume when he partners Russian Elena Vesnina in the mixed doubles final against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Horia Tecau on Sunday.
