New Zealand men's tennis No.1 Dan King-Turner is in hospital, but No.2 seed Rubin Statham led the Kiwis to a tight 3-2 Davis Cup victory against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday evening.
King-Turner went into his match with Sri Lankan No.1 Harshana Godamanna with New Zealand holding a 2-1 advantage, but at 3-0 down in the fifth set and after nearly five hours of play, King-Turner retired and was rushed to Hospital suffering from dehydration and cramps.
He has not been released.
That left Statham shouldering the Kiwis' hopes as he faced Sri Lanka's No.2 Rajeev Rajapakse.
Statham easily pulled through in just two hours, but moments before the game was to be called off due to bad light, with a 6-1 6-0 7-5 victory to give his country a 3-2 win.
New Zealand will now progress to the second-round semifinals where it meets Pakistan, which beat Hong-Kong China at the weekend.
The venue is yet to be confirmed.
