Day Two hasn't started as positively for the locals at the Australian Open, with Jarmila Gajdosova and Isabella Holland both sent packing in early matches at Melbourne Park.
On Monday three of the seven Australians in action got through, with rising star Bernard Tomic headlining proceedings with his comeback five-set win over Spanish No.22 seed Fernando Verdasco.
But while Casey Dellacqua and Olivia Rogowska were the others who advanced to the second round on the opening day, Gajdosova and Holland quickly joined Anastasia Rodionova, Greg Jones, Ben Mitchell and Ashleigh Barty in the exit queue.
Drawn against Russian No.27 seed Maria Kirilenko, who reached the last eight at Melbourne Park two years ago, Gajdosova battled hard throughout but was unable to capitalise on her solid display as she went down 6-4 6-2, the defeat leaving her with seven first-round losses from as many visits here since she first contested the event in 2006.
Gajdosova will be ruing missed opportunities when she reviews the clash, having failed to convert any of seven break points including three at 0-40 as Kirilenko served for the match, with Kirilenko far more efficient as she herself broke three times from as many opportunities.
Holland fared even worse against Israeli Shahar Peer, managing to win just two games as she was taken apart 6-2 6-0 in 57 minutes by the 2007 quarter-finalist.
Holland may have hot the only winner of the match but she was no match for Peer who had a superb first-serve percentage of 80 and then converted 82 percent of her first serves.
Local fans will be hoping for stronger showings later in the day, particularly at Rod Laver Arena with US Open champ Sam Stosur drawn against Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the afternoon before Lleyton Hewitt is in the spotlight in the evening session against German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe.
Jelena Dokic will also be in action against Russian Anna Chakvetadze at Margaret Court Arena, where Marinko Matosevic will later meet French No.14 seed Gael Monfils.
And Matthew Ebden will do battle with Brazilian Joao Souza, James Duckworth takes on Estonian Jurgen Kopp and Bojana Bobusic will play German No.30 seed Angelique Kerber.
