(7-4) 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 at the hands of Italy's Andreas Seppi.

The 24th seed, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, was ousted 6-3 2-6 6-3 6-1 by Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.

Thomaz Bellucci, the 25th seed from Brazil, progressed in straight sets against compatriot Ricardo Mello, while 26th-seeded Gilles Simon of France did likewise against Spain's Guillermo Alcaide.

Paul-Henri Mathieu triumphed in four sets in the all-French clash with Marc Gicquel, 6-1 7-5 3-6 6-1.

In the day's late matches, 14th-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain became another big-name casualty as he lost a five-set epic to Belgium's Xavier Malisse, 6-2 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-1, while Spain's Marcel Granollers teed up a clash with Soderling by defeating Portugal's Frederico Gil 6-3 6-0 6-3.

Other winners included Ukrainian duo Alexandr Dolgopolov and Illya Marchenko, Sam Querrey of the USA, France's Florent Serra, Martin Fischer of Austria and 33rd seed Philipp Petzschner.
