Stanislas Wawrinka ended Andy Murray's hopes of a maiden Grand Slam title with a four-set upset win at the US Open on Sunday.
The fourth seed took the first set in a tie-breaker before Wawrinka hit back to claim a 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 victory in three hours and 56 minutes.
Wawrinka, seeded 25, hit 58 winners for the match to reverse the result of the last time they played in New York when Murray thrashed the Swiss 6-1 6-3 6-3 on his way to the final.
The world No.27 has now reached the fourth round at the US Open for the third consecutive year, while for Murray it was a case of what might have been, having only passed the round of 16 once in five attempts.
Wawrinka will now play Sam Querrey for a spot in the quarter-finals after the American 20th seed defeated Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3 6-4 6-4 earlier in the day.
Querrey is the lone hope for America in the men's singles after Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny accounted for 18th seed John Isner 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
Earlier, eighth seed Fernando Verdasco needed four sets to get past Argentine David Nalbandian.
The Spaniard won 6-2 3-6 6-3 6-2 in just under three hours against the 31st seed to advance to a clash against compatriot David Ferrer.
"It's good that there is going to be for sure one Spanish player in the quarter-finals," Verdasco said.
"It's always nice to see all the Spanish winning and being in the last rounds."
"If you need to lose, it's better to lose against a Spanish player, then at least one guy is going to be here for one round more."
The 10th-seeded Ferrer booked his spot in the round of 16 with a straight-sets win over another Spaniard, David Gimeno-Traver.
Tommy Robredo recovered from a first-set slip-up to beat Michael Llodra after the big-serving Frenchman retired midway through the fourth set with the scores at 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 2-1.
Albert Montanes was another Spaniard on the receiving end of a retirement win after Japan's Kei Nishikori pulled out with the score at 6-2 2-1.
