Kvitova enjoys the test

Kvitova sees positives in tough win

01/19/2012 09:17:26 PM

World number two Petra Kvitova said surviving a second-round scare at the Australian Open will hold her in good stead.

The Czech was a break down in the deciding set of her clash against Carla Suarez Navarro, before recovering to win 6-2 2-6 6-4 on Thursday.

Kvitova, 21, said the tough contest will ensure she is prepared for the later stages of the first Grand Slam of the year.

"For my mentality, it was very tough, and I fought today. So, I mean, it was good preparation for next match," she said.

"I know that I can fight and I can win if I'm playing badly."

"It's good that I'm through and I have won. I mean, she played very well in the second set. It was very tough for me to get back in the third."

Kvitova hit 48 unforced errors and 31 winners in an unconvincing display against world number 58 Suarez Navarro.

The Wimbledon champion said she struggled with the Spaniard's unpredictability after the first set.

"I didn't know what she will play. (Whether) it will be winners or some slice or she'll go to the net. So I was really little bit confused on the court," Kvitova said.

"I tried to get back and play more rallies and more shots in court."

Kvitova, who could be world number one by tournament's end, will meet 27th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko in the third round.
