Kirilenko rallies again in Thailand

Fourth seed Maria Kirilenko has survived another scare to battle through to the quarter-finals of the Pattaya Open on Wednesday.

The Russian was forced into a fight by Australian Anastasia Rodionova, coming from 5-2 down in the deciding set to win 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) at the WTA International event in Thailand.

Kirilenko, 25, survived a match point before beating another Australian, Casey Dellacqua, in the first round on Tuesday.

After a slow start against world number 98 Rodionova, Kirilenko forced a third set having converted her only two break point opportunities in the second.

But Rodionova made a strong start to the decider, racing out to a 5-2 lead and looking set for her first win against Kirilenko after losing their previous two meetings.

However, Kirilenko clawed her way back into the encounter and forced a tie-break, taking a 6-1 lead before booking a place in the last eight.

Awaiting her in the quarter-finals is Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, who disposed of Chinese Taipei's Chang Kai-Chen 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.

The 34-year-old, twice runner-up at the tournament on home soil, converted all six of her break-point chances in the win.

Meanwhile, top seed Vera Zvonareva needed just one hour and 15 minutes to dispose of Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3 6-3.

Seventh seed Sorana Cirstea, of Romania, was similarly impressive, easing past Japan's Misaki Doi 6-2 6-2.
