Federer v Djokovic IV

Federer v Djokovic IV

09/09/2010 06:58:43 AM

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will face off for the fourth straight year at the US Open after both won their quarter-finals on Wednesday.

World No.2 Federer has knocked the Serbian out of the tournament the last three years - in the final in 2007 and the semi-final in 2008 and 2009.

They will again meet in the last four at Flushing Meadows this year after Djokovic had a straight-sets win over Gael Monfils and Federer overcame fifth seed Robin Soderling 6-4 6-4 7-5 on Wednesday.

Djokovic handled the blustery conditions better than the young Frenchman despite some early frustration to clinch a 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 6-2 victory - and is now setting himself for the biggest test in tennis.

But despite his poor record against Federer at the US Open, Djokovic said he wasn't fazed about having to play the Swiss maestro again.

"What is done is done," said Djokovic. "The draw is the way it is."

"You know, I lost to Federer the last three years we played here. But every year I tried to win."

"I tried to go on the court with a positive attitude. He's a great champion, of course. A great player."

"We are all motivated to do well, to go far, trying to make that step further in the tournament."

"I'm really happy with the way I'm using my experience on the court in those conditions."

Soderling was expected to challenge Federer after knocking him out of the French Open quarter-finals earlier this year, but the 16-time Grand Slam champion brushed him aside in straight sets.

Like most players this week Federer and Soderling struggled in the high winds at Flushing Meadows, but the Swiss said he thought he had handled the conditions well.

"Playing in the wind was so hard. Against the wind it only takes a little bit of a bad serving game and the other guy is back in the match. I think I did a good job on that front," Federer said.

"I was taking chances and playing safe when it was important, so under the circumstances I was able to mix it up quite well, even though it was hard to time the ball."

This will be Federer's 25th Grand Slam semi-final as he aims to win his sixth US Open title, but he knows Djokovic will provide a stiff challenge despite their recent head-to-head record.

"We have played in the past and it is Novak's fourth consecutive semi-final. He will be prove a tough opponent," Federer said.

"I'm 3-0 here against him, we always play in big matches. He is playing great after his first round and I know he's looking for a big break at the Open."
