Fed, Hewitt in rankings drop

07/05/2010 11:14:33 PM

Roger Federer has dropped out of the top two in the world rankings for the first time in almost seven years while Australian Lleyton Hewitt also fell despite making the round of 16 last week at Wimbledon.

Federer's shock quarter-final defeat at the All England Club has resulted in the Swiss dropping to third on the ATP list, behind both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

It is the first time since November 2003 that Federer has been ranked outside the world's top two and he remains one week short of Pete Sampras' all-time record of 286 weeks as world No.1.

Wimbledon champion Nadal stretched his lead at the top to nearly 4,000 points after picking up 2,000 for his victory in SW19.

His final victim, Tomas Berdych, the man who ousted Federer, moves up to a career-high position of eighth, while British star Andy Murray remains fourth.

Hewitt, who beat Federer in the final at Halle before Wimbledon, dropped five spots to No.31 in the world.

Hewitt and close friend Peter Luczak are the only Australians inside the top 100 - the latter moving up five places to 78th.

Carsten Ball is at 131, while Chris Guccione is struggling at 218th in the rankings, just ahead of Bernard Tomic at 226.

In the women's rankings, Serena Williams remains top of the pile after her Wimbledon triumph.

Runner-up Vera Zvonareva is back in the top 10 after her impressive run to the final in SW19 - she is now ninth on the list, up from 21st.

Beaten semi-finalists Petra Kvitova (29th from 62nd) and Tsvetana Pironkova (35th from 82nd) both enjoy big rises, while Aussie Samantha Stosur moves into the top five for the first time.

Anastasia Rodionova, who was beaten in the first round of the Swedish Open on Monday, lies at 71, with Jarmila Groth at 76 and Alicia Molik 86.
