Taylor Dent was a first-round casualty in the Hall of Fame Championships at Rhode Island.
The eighth seed, seeking a return to the form he showed prior to back surgery two years ago, was dumped out by Go Soeda. Japan's top-ranked player won 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Elsewhere, American Ryan Harrison eased past Slovakia's Karol Beck, 6-1 6-2, while Belgium's Olivier Rochus - the fourth seed - saw off France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
Canada's Frank Dancevic also progressed in straight sets, 7-5 6-4, at the expense of France's Marc Gicquel, while Jamaica's Dustin Brown beat Germany's Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (6-7) 6-4.
