Azarenka: No.1 path takes back seat

Azarenka: No.1 path takes back seat

01/16/2012 04:39:21 AM

A shot at the world No.1 ranking is taking secondary concern for Victoria Azarenka as she attempts to build a campaign for her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

The Belarusian is coming off a win in the APIA International last week and kicked off her Melbourne campaign with a 6-0 6-1 win over Great Britain's Heather Watson.

In that sort of form, she could soon ascend to the top of the rankings, but she would like to do that with a Grand Slam win, rather than become the latest of a procession of women's tennis players to claim the top ranking without success at one of the big four tournaments.

"Before you win matches, you're not going to have any ranking. The most important thing is to go deep in the tournaments, and then you have your ranking," she said.

But while she is desperate to taste success in Melbourne, having failed to make it past the final four in her previous 24 Grand Slam appearances, she sees a match by match focus as the best way of achieving her goal.

"This is always the goal. For me, I'm such a competitor that I always put challenges on myself on the court, off the court, and I try to reach them," she said.

"I always go step by step. Cannot jump ahead. I think now is a good opportunity. I feel good playing.
But I'm going to take it step by step all the way through."

"I'm approaching it day by day, because every day is different. Sometimes you feel great; sometimes you feel sleepy; sometimes you feel energetic like crazy."

"It's really more important on how well you take each moment and every detail."

Despite the ease of her opening round win, Azarenka felt she had a strong hit out and will be improved ahead of her second round date with local wildcard Casey Dellacqua.

"The score is easy but to actually play the match, it's never easy, especially for me coming here only Saturday. I only hit once before the match," she said.

"The first time I actually hit on centre court was today in the morning. That's why I came earlier, you know, to try to feel the court."

"I think it was a good performance. There are few things for me that I have to work on tomorrow to be better in my second round. But, I take what I get. I cannot complain."
