Losing America's Cup syndicate boss Ernesto Bertarelli is waiting to see how the cards for before deciding whether he will look to challenge for the Cup in the future.

His Alinghi syndicate lost the Deed of Gift Cup match 0-2 to Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle at Valencia.

Bertarelli, the principal helmsman on his boat, said: "The thing that comes to mind right now is that over the last 10 years anyone who has ever come close to the Alinghi team understands what I feel now."

"There's a unique warmth, unique spirit, unique friendship that ties any person who has either worked, cheered, come close and met the Alinghi team, so I'm very proud of our team and what we have achieved over the last 10 years."

Bertarelli formed his team, controversially, after New Zealand successfully defended the Cup in 2000, taking several of Team New Zealand's sailors with him.

Alinghi beat Team New Zealand in 2003 and then defended the Cup in Valencia in 2007.

One of those sailors, team skipper and tactician Brad Butterworth said after Sunday's defeat: "We were a bit disappointed the whole thing is over in two races, but you have to hand it to Oracle.

"What they wound up with is a plane, not a boat. So they deserved to beat us. They went very fast and sailed well. Give all credit to this."

Butterworth said the time penalty the team incurred was because of the number of boats on the port end of the starting line, and then it was late to the starboard end.

"We were a couple of seconds late and got a penalty, but that wasn't going to decide the race," he said.

Bertarelli said of the future for Alinghi: "It's not for me to decide the future of the Cup anymore.

"I will wait to see where the future is going to take us and then I will decide."
