Sale still in the hunt

Sale Sharks kept themselves in the hunt for a place in the quarter-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup with a 41-21 win over French side Agen.

The bonus-point victory puts Sale in second place in Pool Five behind leaders Brive, and their home clash with the French side already has the look of a group decider.

First five-eighths Valentin Courrent and Nick McLeod swapped early penalties before the home side took advantage of a yellow card shown to Agen lock Damien Lagrange.

The Sharks made their one-man advantage count in emphatic fashion with quick tries from Tom Brady and skipper David Seymour to stretch their lead to 20-6.

Courrent's third penalty on the stroke of half-time made it 20-9, but after the break Brady crossed for his second try before halfback Cillian Willis scored the home side's fourth try for the vital bonus point.

Agen's replacement centre Jamie Robinson, the former Wales international, and Tongan No.8 Opeti Fonua then scored tries for the visitors to close the gap, but a late try from Scott Mathie sealed a comfortable Sale win.

Jonny Wilkinson contributed 11 points as Toulon cruised past his former club Newcastle with a 36-10 win that takes them a step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages.

The former England first five-eighths, who this week penned a new deal with the club following his international retirement, got the scoreboard ticking for the hosts after just seven minutes.

Jeremy Manning hit back for the Falcons after 16 minutes before Geoffroy Messina grabbed the game's first try.

Christian Loamanu then pounced with two quick-fire tries, with Wilkinson converting both to ensure a 22-3 half-time lead.

Wales prop Eifion Lewis Roberts charged over for the French side's fourth try to wrap up the bonus-point within five minutes of the restart of play.

Electric winger David Smith raced over the whitewash for Toulon's fifth but Newcastle had the last word as Corne Uys grabbed a late consolation, which Manning converted.

Worcester kept their European hopes alive with an emphatic 57-13 victory over Bucharest at Sixways.

Marcel Garvey scored twice in the first half as the Warriors outclassed the Romanians, who played half the game with 14 men following four yellow cards.

The bonus-point victory saw Worcester keep the pressure on Pool One leaders Stade Francais, who they meet in Paris in the final round.

Florin Vlaicu gave Bucharest a shock lead but the visitors' lack of discipline was a big problem.

The Worcester pack, anchored by Tevita Taumoepeau, earned a penalty try before Garvey and Nile Dacres effectively ended the tie as a contest before half-time.

Aleki Lutui, Chris Pennell, Josh Drauniniu, Miles Benjamin and Jake Abbott rounded off the rout amid more yellow cards for Bucharest who saw Valentine Popirlan score their solitary try.

Perpignan leapfrogged Exeter at the top of Pool Four though only after stuttering to a 30-13 victory at Cavalieri Prato.

Last year's Heineken Cup semi-finalists were forced to rely on penalty tries from their their burgeoning pack to get the better of the Italians, before Henry Tuilagi claimed a bonus point late on.

Former England fullback Mark Van Gisbergen scored 13 points, including the last of his team's six tries, as Lyon beat Petrarca 43-3 in Pool Two.

On Thursday night, Wales international Nicky Robinson contributed 17 points to help London Wasps claim a valuable 25-11 home win over Bayonne .
