locked horns during the World Cup when Thomas announced unilaterally that he had commissioned a review of England's performance, which ran roughshod over the agreed process.
"You have to accept that for English rugby to be successful the clubs and country have to work hand in glove. When somebody pulls that hand out of the glove and smacks you, it doesn't work," McCafferty said.
"That is not the way we can work effectively together. But as long as everyone accepts that - and it is a two-way street, we have to help produce a successful England team - then English rugby will thrive.
"Things compounded themselves in New Zealand and I don't think things were handled very well by the RFU, which I think they accept.
"We have a contract that works. The agreement has been a big success. The issue now is to translate that into sustained England success.
"We thought we were on track for that after the Six Nations but it went wrong in the World Cup.
"We are in the recovery phase as far as England is concerned. It is well trailed there will be some significant changes in the senior squad (for the Six Nations).
"Hopefully that will galvanise everyone further."
