Kalman called up

01/16/2012 07:03:31 PM

Tighthead prop Ed Kalman has been called into Scotland's Six Nations squad in place of injured Glasgow Warriors team-mate Moray Low, the Scottish Rugby Union announced on Monday.

Kalman is Glasgow's third-choice tighthead, but performed well in yesterday's 23-16 Heineken Cup loss to defending champions Leinster.

The 29-year-old will join up with the Scotland squad for next week's training camp in St Andrews.

With Low out of the opening exchanges of the Six Nations with a knee injury and Mike Cusack absent with an ankle injury, Kalman has seized his opportunity to impress.

Now he has the chance to stake his claim for a place in the Scotland squad for the February 4 Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.

A statement from the Scottish Rugby Union read: "Ed Kalman, the uncapped 29-year-old Glasgow Warriors prop, has been called into the Scotland squad for the opening two games of the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

"Kalman, who had a fine game for the Warriors against Leinster in the Heineken Cup yesterday, will join up with the squad for a training camp in St Andrews next week.

"He is called up after his Warriors team-mate, Moray Low, was ruled out of the start of the championship with a knee injury.

"Kalman, who has played for Scotland A on 12 occasions has been with the Warriors since he joined them in 2007 after one season with Border Reivers."

Kalman has previously plied his trade with Newcastle Falcons and Leeds in England and was in Cambridge University's Varsity match-winning team in 2005.
