Bulls confident for final

Bulls confident for final

05/28/2010 08:47:22 PM

Frans Ludeke believes his Bulls side and fellow Super 14 finalist, the Stormers, were the two best teams in this season's competition and are in their rightful place ahead of tomorrow's Soweto climax.

The clash in the Johannesburg township brings together the best defence in 2010 against the best attack, while the two South African sides are also the two that ended the regular season in positions one and two on the table.

There has been plenty of talk in the build-up focusing on the statistics - not just for this season, but past ones as well, especially for the home side.

The Pretoria franchise, winner of the competition in two of the past three seasons, is unbeaten at home since defeat against the Hurricanes in 2008, but it is not playing at its regular Loftus Versfeld Stadium this time around.

Instead the Orlando Stadium in Soweto is its new home for the play-offs after its usual venue needed to be handed over to world football governing body FIFA, which is using it for next month's World Cup.

"It is good to know that we have already had an experience in Orlando and it has become our home town for the next week," Ludeke said after the 39-24 semi-final win over the Crusaders last week.

"We are looking forward to going back there. The crowd and everyone in Soweto were amazing."

As for the game, he continued: "I think the two best teams in the competition are playing in the final."

"It's two South African teams, the guys know each other and it's a derby but that will not be important for us."

"We are focusing on other things like making sure that our plan is good enough to work in the game for us."

There are several key factors that tilt the scales in favour of his side, which has scored a massive 50 tries in its 14 games so far.

It is playing in its third final in four years, while 13 out of the starting XV have already won the title - only Francois Hougaard and Gerhard van den Heever have not played in a final.

In contrast, only former player Bryan Habana knows the feeling of appearing in a Super 14 final.

The head-to-head record between the sides also favours the Bulls, who have won five out of their past six meetings with their only loss coming two weeks ago when Ludeke fielded a second-string team for a meaningless encounter in Cape Town.

But the coach insists that numbers mean little.

He added: "It's only stats, what is going to count on Saturday is who defends the best and who attacks the best and more importantly, which side uses their opportunities."

"Nothing else counts."

"We have closed the door on last year and this year has its own magic and chemistry."

"The rules have changed, the games have taken on a different shape and there are different focal points in all the matches we have played."

"It's a new game, there are new situations and we only have 80 minutes on Saturday to make the best of it."
