It was a good day for New York in the NHL on Tuesday with both the Rangers and the Islanders recording 3-0 wins.
After losing to Montreal on Sunday, the league-leading Rangers returned to their winning ways with a victory over the Nashville Predators at Madison Square Garden.
The Predators had won eight of their last 10 matches heading into Tuesday's clash, including five in a row, but could not find a way to beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who made 27 saves on the way to keeping his fourth shutout of the season.
New York struggled to rediscover their impressive early-season scoring form, but a goal in each period, from Dan Girardi, John Mitchell and Ryan Callahan, were enough to give them their 29th win of the campaign.
Their neighbours the Islander were also winners on Tuesday, upsetting the more fancied Washington Capitals 3-0.
The Islanders may sit on the bottom of the Atlantic Division, but that did not stop them pulling off a shock victory against the Southeast Division's second ranked side.
PA Parenteau scored twice after John Tavares had bagged the opener for the Islanders, with goalie Evgeni Nabokov making 17 saves as New York shutout the normally potent Capitals attack.
Elsewhere, Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice as the New Jersey Devil routed the Winnipeg Jets 5-1, while the Philadelphia Flyers cruised past the Minnesota Wild by the same scoreline.
The struggling Columbus Blue Jackets pulled off a rare win against Edmonton, coming from two goals down to beat the Oilers 4-2.
The Tampa Bay Lightning snapped a seven game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Stanley Cup champions the Boston Bruins, while the Ottawa Senatros rallied from two goals down to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2.
Evgeni Malkin scored his 22nd goal of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in a shootout, while penalties were also needed to split Detroit and Dallas, with the Red Wings coming out on top 3-2.
The Los Angeles Kings also needed a shootout to defeat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2, as did the San Jose Sharks, who downed Calgary 2-1.
