The New York Rangers held off a late rally from the Pittsburgh Penguins to win 4-3 in the NHL on Tuesday.
Visitors Pittsburgh struck first in a clash between the top two in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
James Neal was the man on target with a power-play goal in the 18th minute of the opening period, sending the Penguins in 1-0 ahead at the first break.
But the Rangers came out firing in the second.One power-play goal apiece from Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik, together with strikes from John Mitchell and Brad Richards, transformed the deficit into a 4-1 lead.
Evgeni Malkin's wrist shot for Pittsburgh with seconds left made it 4-2 going into the final period.
Pascal Dupuis scored for the Penguins four minutes into the third, ensuring a nervous conclusion for the home supporters.
But the Rangers saw out the time remaining to extend their winning streak to three matches, and close the gap on division leaders Pittsburgh.
In other matches, the Ottawa Senators came from behind to win 6-4 at the Winnipeg Jets.
Trailing 4-3 early in the third period, Jason Spezza, Zack Smith and Nick Foligno all scored in the final 10 minutes to secure victory for Ottawa.
Western Conference Pacific Division leaders the Phoenix Coyotes were big winners on Tuesday, beating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on the road.
Daymond Langkow and Shane Doan struck in the first and second period respectively to give Phoenix the lead, before Radim Vrbata and Ray Whitney made sure of the win with goals early in the third.
Derek Smith scored the only goal as the Calgary Flames saw off the visit of the Nashville Predators 1-0.
Brian Rolston's backhand effort proved to be the winner as the New York Islanders defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1.
Goaltender Al Montoya was the real hero for the Islanders, as he kept out 30 shots in the match.
Dale Hunter suffered a loss in his first match as Washington coach, with the Capitals going down 2-1 at home to St Louis Blues.
And Kirk Muller endured a similar fate in his bow as the Carolina Hurricanes' new coach, with the visiting Florida Panthers running out 3-1 winners.
Finally, the Vancouver Canucks dispatched the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 at home for their fifth straight victory.
Daniel Sedin and David Booth gave Vancouver a 2-0 lead by the first break.
Samuel Pahlsson got one back for Columbus early in the third, but Ryan Kesler hit back to restore the two-goal lead, before Alexandre Burrows added extra gloss in the final minute.
