Australian surfer Stephanie Gilmore is on track for a stunning four consecutive world titles after taking out the Beachley Classic on Monday.
The three-time world champion defeated compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons in a nail-biting final in front of a packed crowd at Sydney's Dee Why Beach.
Gilmore was determined to claim the richest event on the women's world tour after a surprise loss to little-known Sarah Mason at the previous event in New Zealand two weeks ago.
But the world No.1 had to work hard for her victory with 19-year-old Fitzgibbons leading for most of the final until Gilmore stole the win inside the last four minutes.
Gilmore put on a powerful display during Monday's competition, producing two of the day's best rides during the finals, earning herself near-perfect scores.
The 22-year-old is now well clear on top of the world tour rankings, increasing the likelihood of earning herself her fourth world title having now won three of the first four tour events.
"It’s incredible how good this feels," Gilmore said.
"Competing in Australia is one of my favourite things to do."
"I feel comfortable in these waters and have won this event a few times. I guess I’m on a roll and I’m feeling good."
The win was Gilmore's 15th world tour victory and her first Beachley Classic titles since 2007. She has now won three of the four events she has contested this year.
Fitzgibbon's second-placing in as many events sees her pick up 972 ratings points and keeps her in touching distance with Gilmore at the top of the standings.
"It’s a little frustrating to get back-to-back seconds but I’m so happy to be in the situation to reach the final and eventually go down to Steph (Gilmore)," Fitzgibbons said.
"Being world No.2 is a great place to be at this stage of the year."
"I haven’t been this high on the rankings before, but I’m definitely closer to where I want to be."
Defending Beachley Classic champion Silvana Lima finished equal third alongside Peru's Sofia Mulanovich.
