The New York Giants will meet the New England Patriots in the NFL's Super Bowl after both sides won their championship games on Sunday.

A 31-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes saw the Giants to a thrilling 20-17 sudden-death overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park.

Quarterback Eli Manning (32 of 58 for 316 yards and two touchdowns) starred as the Giants won the NFC championship and booked a meeting with the Patriots in the season decider on February 5.

The teams met in the Super Bowl in 2008, when the Giants recorded a 17-14 win for what was their third title.

Tynes' winning field goal was set up by a second costly mistake from 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams, who fumbled and allowed Devin Thomas to recover.

Just five plays later, Tynes delivered the winning field goal to put the Giants into their fifth season-deciding match.

Earlier, the Patriots recorded a 23-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC championship game.

Ravens place kicker Billy Cundiff missed a field-goal attempt from 32 yards with 11 seconds remaining that would have forced overtime.

"It's a kick I've kicked 1,000 times," Cundiff told reporters. "No excuse for it."

The Patriots also survived when what looked to be a game-winning touchdown catch was dramatically knocked from the hands of wide receiver Lee Evans, moments before Cundiff missed.

It will be the Patriots' fifth Super Bowl appearance with Tom Brady (22 of 36 for 239 yards) at quarterback and Bill Belichick coaching, and the pair will be aiming to lift their fourth crown together when they meet the Giants in Indianapolis.
