The Ottawa Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks had their respective losing runs extended to five matches in the NHL on Friday.
Mark Eaton's overtime winner helped the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win against the Senators at Scotiabank Place.
The defenseman, 34, made his 600th NHL game a memorable one, netting his first goal in 121 appearances to guide the Islanders to an unlikely win.
Eaton collected a pass from Slovakian Milan Jurcina before hitting a backhander behind Senators goaltender Craig Anderson.
The Senators remain second in the Northeast Division despite their fifth straight loss, while the Islanders are bottom of the Atlantic.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks also had their losing streak extended to five after a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames.
Right wing Jarome Iginla scored and had an assist for the victors as they moved into third in the Northwest Division.
The Blackhawks have slipped to fourth in the Central on the back of their poor run.
In other matches, the Southeast Division-leading Florida Panthers brushed past the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 thanks to goals from Kris Versteeg and Sean Bergenheim.
A second-period goal from Jamie Langenbrunner saw the St Louis Blues to a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings, while the Columbus Blue Jackets overcame fellow strugglers the Anaheim Ducks with a 3-2 overtime victory.
