Canucks edge out Predators

Canucks edge Predators in shootout

02/08/2012 05:44:19 AM

The Vancouver Canucks pulled within one point of Western Conference leaders Detroit in the NHL with a 4-3 shootout win over Nashville.

Goals from Ryan Kesler, Byron Bitz and Daniel Sedin had the Canucks leading 3-1 at the end of the first period, but the Predators hit back in the second term through Sergei Kostitsyn and Mike Fisher.

With neither side able to break the deadlock in the third period or in overtime, the game headed for a shootout and when Alexander Edler scored in the sixth round for Vancouver, Colin Wilson's miss meant the Canucks had won their second game in a row.

The victory moved them to 71 points for the season, just behind the Detroit Red Wings on 72 in the Western Conference.

Elsewhere in the West, the Phoenix Coyotes moved level with the eighth-placed Minnesota Wild in the race for a playoff berth courtesy of their 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on the road.

Radim Vrbata scored a goal and added an assist for the Coyotes, who won their third game in succession to move level on 58 points with the Wild.

Minnesota suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat to the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets.

Also on Tuesday (local time), the Colorado Avalanche ran out 5-2 winners over the Chicago Blackhawks and a first-period goal from David Clarkson saw the New Jersey Devils defeat Eastern Conference leaders the New York Rangers 1-0.

The New York Islanders were 1-0 shootout victors against the Philadelphia Flyers, two goals from Alex Ovechkin helped the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 rout of the Florida Panthers while a Tomas Plekanec goal in the seventh round of the shootout handed the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Winnipeg Jets were too strong for the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning 2-1, the Los Angeles Kings took care of the Lightning in Tampa Bay with a 3-1 victory and David Perron scored two goals in the St Louis Blues' 3-1 triumph over the Ottawa Senators.
