Bradford NFL top pick

The St Louis Rams have made Oklahoma quarter-back Sam Bradford top pick in the NFL draft on Friday.

Bradford, 22, was heavily tipped to de drafted first and the Rams confirmed he would be joining their ranks next season on day one of the three-day event at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Bradford, who was the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, started 31 games for the Sooners, setting school records by completing 67.64 percent of his passes for 8403 yards and 88 touchdowns.

The Detroit Lions were second up and, like the Rams before them, declined to take their full 10-minute window as they picked up Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Suh, son of a Jamaican mother and Cameroonian father, was considered the best defensive player in the draft and a potential No.1 pick.

Bradford's Oklahoma team-mate Gerald McCoy, another defensive tackle, was selected third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recruiting him.

The Washington Redskins ensured that three of the top-four picks would be Oklahoma alumni, with offensive tackle Trent Williams next to be called.

The Kansas City Chiefs were next to pick and they summoned University of Tennessee strong safety Eric Berry, who made seven interceptions last term and made 265 interception-return yards.

Russell Okung, Oklahoma State's offensive tackle, was drafted sixth by the Seattle Seahawks, Florida cornerback Joe Haden went to the Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders added University of Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain to their roster.

CJ Spiller of Clemson was the ninth name called, by the Buffalo Bills, becoming the first running back to be contracted, while California's Tyson Aluala rounded out the top 10 after being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Quarter-back Tim Tebow, the Heisman winner in 2007 and considered one of the best college players ever, had attracted plenty of pre-draft attention with commentators suggesting his lack of suitability for the NFL might see him squeezed out of the first round.

But the Denver Broncos made the decorated Florida Gators man the 25th player chosen.
