Vixens too slick

Vixens too slick

04/12/2010 08:03:49 AM

The Canterbury Tactix were outclassed 64-49 by the table-topping Melbourne Vixens in ANZ Championship netball action in Christchurch on Monday.

Having their work cut out against the No.1 side, the eighth-placed Tactix did well to hold its own in the opening stanza but it all fell apart quickly after that.

The pressure told on the home team as the Vixens showed their class once they moved into top gear and were able to maintain the intensity right through.

It was the unbeaten Vixens, who showed early rustiness after arriving in town without two of their regular starting line-up. Defender Julie Corletto and midcourter Chelsey Nash were left at home with injury niggles.

The Vixens had no problems with the quality of their replacements but at the outset it was the young Tactix line-up which made the better start.

Refusing to be intimidated, up-and-coming defender Charlotte Kight revelled in the opportunity to square off against the dazzling speed and athleticism of Sharelle McMahon as the pair engaged in an entertaining tussle throughout the match.

Experienced centre Maree Bowden marshalled her troops expertly, showing plenty of movement and variety on attack as both teams went through little surges.

Well-performed goalshoot Caitlin Thwaites kept the Vixens on level terms through her accuracy as a high-scoring, high quality and even first quarter ended all square at 15 apiecel.

Showing more purpose on the resumption, the Vixens looked threatening, getting the jump on the home team on attack with slick ball movement into the capable hands of Thwaites and McMahon.

Quick on the turnaround, the Vixens pounced on the increasing errors being coughed up by the Tactix with speedy and accurate through-court play.

The home team had trouble stemming the flow as the Vixens continued to build ominously and assert their dominance.

Accuracy, speed and flair combined to blow the Vixens out to a commanding 35-24 half-time lead.

Changes to the Tactix line-up in the second half did little to curb the onslaught as the Vixens maintained their intensity and pressure. The in-circle defensive pairing of Damelza McCloud, up against her 2008 team-mates, and Bianca Chatfield turned up the heat on the Tactix shooters, leaving the home team scratching for options.

At the other end of the court, Thwaites and McMahon were all class, dictating the tempo with their great understanding, clever play and accurate finishing.

Battling hard on defence and living off scraps, the hosts did well to keep the score from ballooning out, retaining the half-time margin as the visitors went to the last break 48-37 ahead.

The Vixens continued to squeeze the resistance out of the Tactix in the run home, their oppressive defence and impressive attacking momentum leaving the opposition scrambling in their wake.

Silver Fern Anna Thompson played a strong hand for the losers, showing fine movement and shooting skills against a quality opposition.

In the evening's late game, the Queensland Firebirds have produced their first win of the season, defeating the Northern Mystics 71-54.

Roared on by the home crowd, Firebirds goalshooter Nathalie Medhurst scored 30 goals from 35 attempts as the Queenslanders proved too good for their Auckland rivals.

The result also played its part in ensuring Australia took the honours in Rivalry Round for a second successive year, the Aussies claiming it 288-220 when results were accumulated across the weekend.
