Plummer opts for experience

Plummer opts for experience

Australian netball coach Norma Plummer has opted for experience over youth for her squad to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Plummer named her 12-player squad for October's Games on Monday, with Sharelle McMahon to skipper the side.

The squad contains five members who competed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, which fell just short of the gold medal, beaten by New Zealand in the final.

McMahon, Catherine Cox, Susan Fuhrmann, Natalie von Bertouch and Susan
Pratley were all present four years ago while Mo'onia Gerrard, Rebecca Bulley and Lauren Nourse are other experienced internationals.

But Plummer surprisingly left out younger players Kate Beveridge, Madison Browne and Amy despite being in the squad for a Test series against New Zealand.

"The ones that missed out are still young and have got a lot of time ahead of them," Plummer said.

"They are going to be big players in our team in the not too distant future."

"We've got some experienced internationals and some coming in with just a few caps."

"What pleases me most is the blend of the team and the way the players complement each other on the court."

Australia begin their Games campaign on October 4 against Samoa, before facing India, Jamiaca, Malawi and Trinidad in the group stage.

Australian squad for the Delhi Games: Sharelle McMahon (capt), Rebecca Bulley, Catherine Cox, Susan Fuhrmann, Laura Geitz, Renae Hallinan, Mo'onia Gerrard, Kimberlee Green, Natalie Medhurst, Lauren Nourse, Susan Pratley, Natalie von Bertouch.

Disappointed that Plummer opted for Green/Nourse over Browne. Green didn't have good form in later part of ANZ Championship nor a good final series. Form in the recent tests has not been good enough. Nourse loses drive in the wing attack role, more effective in centre. Browne has had an outstanding ANZ seasons, tour of UK and current tests performed better than Green. That said, Plummer has an outstanding record but I would like to have seen some youth for our future. It is a very aging team!
