Warriors stars unleashed

Bluey unleashes Warriors stars

01/31/2012 08:13:39 PM

The majority of the Warriors' 2011 grand final side, along with new signing Nathan Friend, will be in action for the first time under new coach Brian McClennan in Saturday's NRL pre-season trial against Gold Coast at North Harbour Stadium.

McClennan has named 11 of the 17 players that featured in the grand final loss to the Sea Eagles.

Aaron Heremaia and Lance Hohaia have left for the UK Super League while Manu Vatuvei is turning out for the NRL All Stars across the Tasman.

There are injuries to Kevin Locke, Micheal Luck, Jerome Ropati and Russell Packer that have kept them on the sideline.

"Micheal (Luck) is coming along well after his shoulder surgery but won't be back for a few weeks yet," McClennan revealed.

"Jerome isn’t ready to play just yet but hopefully he'll play a trial before the season starts while Kevin and Russell should be in contention for next weekend's trial against South Sydney (at Coffs Harbour)."

The other 11 – captain Simon Mannering, Bill Tupou, Krisnan Inu, James Maloney, Shaun Johnson, Jacob Lillyman, Sam Rapira, Ben Matulino, Feleti Mateo, Elijah Taylor and Lewis Brown – are all fit to play and will receive meaningful game time.

Also included are six members of the Junior Warriors' 2011 premiership-winning side. They are captain Ben Henry, Konrad Hurrell, Carlos Tuimavave, Sam Lousi, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and Sebastine Ikahihifo.

Titans coach John Cartwright is set to wheel out three new signings in Luke Douglas, Beau Champion and Beau Falloon.

There is no sign yet of Jamal Idris, the blockbusting centre/second-rower who made a big-money move from the Bulldogs at the end of last season.

It is the first step towards Gold Coast's goal of atoning for a disastrous 2011, where they finished dead last after being talked up as a finals contender in pre-season.

Warriors squad: Lewis Brown, Glen Fisiiahi, Nathan Friend, Pita Godinet, Ben Henry, Konrad Hurrell, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Krisnan Inu, Shaun Johnson, Jacob Lillyman, Sam Lousi, Sione Lousi, James Maloney, Simon Mannering (c), Alehana Mara, Feleti Mateo, Ben Matulino, Ivan Penehe, Sam Rapira, Steve Rapira, Ukuma Ta’ai, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Elijah Taylor, Carlos Tuimavave, Bill Tupou.

Gold Coast: Javarn White; Kevin Gordon, Steve Michaels, Dominique Peyroux, Joe Vickery; Jordan Rankin, Beau Henry; Michael Henderson, Kayne Lawton, Matthew White; Ben Ridge, Bodene Thompson; Luke O'Dwyer.
