More injury woes for Bulldogs

More injury woes for Bulldogs

04/30/2010 11:18:04 PM

Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore is hoping next weekend's bye brings about a change of fortune after another of his stars was struck by a serious injury in Friday night's 26-10 loss to the Eels.

Bullocking prop Jarrad Hickey, who only recently returned to action after suffering a bruised lung, broke his arm less than 10 minutes into the torrid encounter at ANZ Stadium.

Hickey will have further scans on Saturday but is likely to be out for up to eight weeks.

It's another heavy blow for the Bulldogs who are already missing six players including internationals Josh Morris, Ben Roberts, Ben Hannant and Dene Halatau.

Despite their injury woes Canterbury put up a courageous effort against the Eels and was still in the game midway through the second half until fatigue - and a brilliant Jarryd Hayne try - secured victory for the home side.

But Moore was full of praise for his injury-hit side and conceded the failure to score early when it had the Eels under pressure had cost his side. Instead it was Parramatta which scored first and took an 8-0 lead to the break which it would never relinquish.

"I thought we showed a lot of spirit, and in the simple parts of the game we were right in the battle but our execution let us down," he said.

"With better execution you probably get in there at half-time with the game locked up, but they scored first and skipped away with the game."

"We're certainly disappointed, we came here expecting to win."

"Missing five or six blokes doesn’t help. Take that many key players out of any side and your cohesion is going to suffer."

"The bye's definitely come at a good time for us."

The good news for the Bulldogs is most of their stars aren't too far off a return.

Morris is expected back for their next match in Round 10 while Roberts, Halatau and also Yileen Gordon should be available not long after.

One bright spot for the Bulldogs was the form of young centre Jamal Idris, who terrorised the Eels defence all night, in particular dual international Timana Tahu.

"His form the last three weeks has been outstanding, he's really taken himself to another level," Moore said of his young centre.

"All the senior blokes are really starting to become positive about how Jamal has handled himself and his consistency the last few weeks."

"If he keeps his feet on ground and keeps heading in that direction be very handy for us."

Moore said his medical staff would also have to monitor five-eighth Blake Green, who was still very dazed at full-time on Friday night after copping a high shot from Fui Fui Moi Moi which saw the Eels prop placed on report.

Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson backed Moi Moi, believing his man didn't do too much wrong.

"He didn't move, I thought that Blake Green ran into him," the Eels coach said.

"He's (Moi Moi) a block of concrete that's all it is."

"I don't think he lifted his arm or even leaned in or had any malice about it. It's just a collision."
