North Queensland have signed West Tigers halfback Robert Lui on the same day the troubled star faced court over accusations he assaulted his girlfriend.
The 21-year-old halfback was released from the final year of his contract with Wests Tigers and will start training with the Cowboys from Monday after agreeing to a two year-deal.
Lui on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting his 22-year-old partner, Taleah Rae Backo, at his North Strathfield house on September 19 - days after Wests were eliminated from the NRL finals.
Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said Lui would bring depth to North Queensland's halves.
"Robert has been a key member in the Wests Tigers finals teams over the past couple of years and his talent and potential has been recognised across the game," Parr said.
"He's a North Queensland boy and is looking forward to being part of our roster and to representing his region."
"At his young age, Robert has virtually his whole career ahead of him and we'll be welcoming him into a solid playing group that will provide leadership and support."
Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said Lui had departed with their best wishes.
"We believe he will benefit from the strong family support available to him in Townsville," he said.
"He is a very talented football player and leaves with our best wishes for the future."
