Hayne settled nerves with his third try in the 65th minute, pushing away from Thurston and splitting two defenders to slam the ball down.
North Queensland came again through Will Tupou, the recipient of a long cut-out pass from Thurston, in the 70th minute but the mountain was just too high to climb.
Watts was placed on report in the final minute for a lifting tackle on Nathan Cayless.
