Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan was quickly brought back to earth on Saturday night as his team crashed to a 24-4 defeat against Melbourne.
A week after claiming his first win as a first-grade coach following his recent elevation to the top job several months early when Ricky Stuart pulled the pin early, Flanagan would have had a good week after the surprise defeat of the Roosters.
But they say a week can be a long time in professional sport and that was illustrated on Saturday night when his team put up a strong fight for half the game but failed to take its chances and was left behind after the break.
"I probably do at the moment yeah (wish the season was over)," Flanagan said.
"I'm looking forward to it after last week's win but after tonight there's probably a bit of that
But we've got a couple of big weeks ahead, we've got Trent and Luke Covell's last game at home next week so we've got to refocus for that."
With two games left Flanagan is now hoping to play spoiler for the finals-bound Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers.
"Next week's a big week for us," he added.
"Trent (Barrett) and Luke Covell retiring and our last game at Shark Park so we'll be up for that one and the last game we'll be throwing everything into that so hopefully e can throw a spanner in the works for there for two teams in the semis."
As for the game itself, Flanagan was left to rue missed opportunities in the first half.
"We were ok in the first half, we held them out a couple of times and there was some desperate defence on the try line," Flanagan said.
"I was quite happy to go in at 6-0 down."
"(But) I just thought in the second half there were two tough decisions there and then we just couldn't handle them."
"Defending our try line against the Inglis' and Slaters was just too hard."
"We just haven't got the attack the moment to come back at them."
