Des Hasler says Queensland selectors need look no further than Manly hooker Matt Ballin should Maroons skipper Cameron Smith fail to overcome an elbow injury before State of Origin I.
Smith is out for at least a fortnight after leaving the field during Australia's Test win over New Zealand on Friday night, leaving him just over a week to prove his fitness before the Queensland team is announced for the series opener on May 26.
The Maroons are likely to name Smith and give him up until match day to overcome the elbow problem, but Sea Eagles boss Hasler believes Ballin should be the understudy.
The craft Manly rake played a significant role in his side's 24-6 win over the Dragons on Saturday night and is in career-best form.
"MBF (Ballin) has been playing good, consistent and solid football this year and he is certainly one to keep an eye on," Hasler said.
"I think he has put his hand up well and truly and he's ready for it.
"If Cameron's no good he will be first choice."
Ballin admitted Origin selection crossed his mind when he heard of Smith's injury, but he is not allowing himself to get too worked up about his chances.
"It's never nice to see anyone get injured but if it means you get a chance then that's great for yourself," he said.
"Apart from him (Smith) taking a break, that's probably the only way you're going to get a job in there."
"We'll see what his scans say but if he is out I would love to play, but he is pretty tough and he’ll want to play for Queensland."
Ballin vowed not to let his state down should he get the call-up.
"It depends what the selectors are looking for. There's (Gold Coast's) Nathan Friend who is playing really well – either of us would be so keen to do the job if he (Smith) can’t play," Ballin said.
"We'd do Queensland proud I'm sure."
"But first things first, he’ll probably be right so I'm sure he wants to play."
