Tschudin shares third

Tschudin shares third

05/21/2010 11:12:32 AM

Australian Andrew Tschudin shot a second four-under-par 68 to share third place with seven-time PGA Tour winner K.J. Choi (66) at the halfway stage of the SK Telecom Open in South Korea.

Korean Kim Dae-hyun, one of five players to share the first-round lead with a 66, shot a course-record equalling 64 at the Sky 72 Golf Club's Ocean Course to lead on 14-under. Bae Sang-moon, the 2007 winner, was three behind after a bogey-free 65.

Henry Epstein, one of the first-round leaders, was the second-best Australian after an even-par 72 that kept him at six-under and sharing seventh with four others.

Brad Kennedy, the other Australian to share the first-day lead, carded a 73 to lie a shot behind in a share of 12th with a group that included compatriot Anthony Summers (70). New Zealander Michael Hendry was also five-under after a 69 that included two eagles.

Australians Scott Arnold and Anthony Brown were three-under after rounds of 68 and 70 respectively.

Tschudin is playing the tournament and the course for the first time despite playing much of his golf on the Korean Tour since 2008, when he won the SBS Lake Hills Open.

The 37-year-old, who has also won three times on the Hooters Tour, bagged a hat-trick of birdies from five through seven, then picked up another shot at 11.

"I played pretty solid again. I hit a lot of greens in regulation and holed a few putts, so it's going well. I like the course and it seems to suit me. If you hit good iron shots, you get good birdie opportunities," said Tschudin, playing in his third OneAsia event of the year.

"I've played with most of these guys on the Korean Tour, so I know them well and they're all good guys. However, this event is new to me as I missed it last year to attend a mate's wedding in Australia."

Kennedy was a little more subdued after a round that featured two bogeys and just one birdie.

"I'm disappointed. I didn't play badly, but I just couldn't get any momentum going," said the 35-year-old.

"I didn't play the par-fives well. The breeze dropped today, so it was there for the taking, but I just didn't give myself enough birdie chances."

Hendry started the day on hole 10 and was initially worried about making the cut after bogeying three of his first five holes. However, a birdie on 17 got the New Zealander back in the swing.

"On 18, I hit my best drive of the day, then aimed to bounce my second shot off the hospitality tent, which it did, but not onto the green. I then chipped in," Hendry said.

"On hole five, I hit a great drive, then hit a six-iron to 30 feet and holed the putt. I also shot two eagles in a round about three weeks ago in New Zealand, although my record is three. It's good to be in contention in a big event like this, as I've only won smaller events in New Zealand."

Full coverage of this week's SK Telecom Open is available domestically on Korean
broadcaster Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), as well as internationally on ESPN Star Sports, ESPN3.com, Network Ten, America One and Bloomberg Television among others.

Since it was launched last year, OneAsia's tournament schedule has more than doubled in size, offering a multitude of full-field playing opportunities to leading players across the region. In 2010, OneAsia will stage 11 tournaments, ultimately seeking to provide players in Asia with an alternative pathway to the PGA Tour and the European Tour.
