Snedeker wins in playoff

Snedeker wins in playoff

01/30/2012 12:47:53 AM

American Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Insurance Open on Sunday after a dramatic playoff in California.

The 31-year-old started the day seven shots behind then-leader Kyle Stanley, but charged home with a five-under-par 67 to match Stanley with a four-round total of 272.

That was enough to take Stanley to a playoff - after he shot a two-over 74 - and Snedeker's experience shone through under pressure as he won on the second play-off hole.

Stanley began the day in front by five shots and with three birdies in the first six holes, he looked sure to win the event.

But a bogey on the eighth shook him and although he responded with a birdie on the ninth, he dropped further strokes on holes 11 and 12.

He kept his composure until the par five 18th when he inexplicably produced a triple-bogey, allowing Snedeker a way in.

The eventual winner had five birdies and no blemishes on his card until the 17th hole when a bogey saw him drop to four shots behind Stanley.

No one saw the dramatic finish coming however, and a birdie from Snedeker and his rival's mishap gave him a chance to win the tournament in a playoff.

Both players fired a birdie on the first playoff hole, which was the 18th, before moving to the 16th where Stanley could not match Snedeker's par.

The cruel end to the day's play robbed the 24-year-old Stanley of his first PGA Tour title.

Finishing third in the all-American top seven was John Rollins, who fired four birdies in his one-under 71 to be two shots off the pace.

Bill Haas fired an even-par 72 while Cameron Tringale shot 71 as the pair tied for fourth.

In a tie for sixth was Hunter Mahan – who fired a three-under 69 – and John Huh, while American quartet Jimmy Walker, Martin Flores, D.A. Points and Justin Leonard were joined by Australian Rod Pampling in a tie for eighth, six shots behind Snedeker and Stanley.

Defending champion and world number 21 Bubba Watson was a further shot adrift, in a tie for 13th.
