Ogilvy: One of my best

Ogilvy: One of my best

12/17/2011 07:22:53 AM

By his own estimation, Geoff Ogilvy has played 'thousands' of rounds at Victoria Golf Club, but none anywhere near as good as Saturday's course record-equalling 63 at the JBWere Australian Masters.

The 34-year-old, who grew up around the corner and played all of his junior and amateur golf at the classic sandbelt layout, takes a two shot lead into the Masters final round after starting the day four shots behind overnight leader Ian Poulter.

"Obviously I'm very comfortable out here at this golf course. I've probably played here more than I've played any other course in the world," Ogilvy said.

"I think in a hit and giggle with some friends I may have had a 62 at some point."

"But there's a fair difference between a Friday afternoon hit and giggle and the Australian Masters, so this would probably be my best round around here."

"Whether it's the lowest or not, it's definitely my best round around here."

Ogilvy started eagle, birdie, birdie and picked up two more shots to the turn to be out in 29.

That would have prompted many of his fellow professionals to fantasise about a score in the 50s, but Ogilvy insists the thought never crossed his mind.

"I did acknowledge to myself that I was eight-under after 12 and that's a pretty good score out here especially with a bogey to that point," he said.

"I thought that's really low ... but I didn't ever really start thinking about crazy numbers, I just knew I was going low and I wanted to just get as far in front as I could."

"I didn't really think about a number."

Ogilvy said he never imagined he'd be leading the tournament 38 holes after bending his putter in frustration at the 16th green on Thursday.

At the time he was going nowhere at one over the card and was forced to improvise with a wedge, not just around the 17th and 18th greens, but on them.

Looking for a replacement, he opted for a mallet putter, a design he hadn't used since him amateur days.

"It's kind of embarrassing to finish the last couple of holes putting with a wedge," said Ogilvy.

"But going out there with a new putter the last couple of days has almost been a challenge for me and lightened up my brain."

"You see it roll well and all of a sudden you love your new putter."

"I've travelled with this putter for three or four months, just had it in the bag."

"I took it out in a practice round for the Australian Open because I wanted to use it but wasn't brave enough and I put it back in."

"I'd been thinking about giving it a try and had a perfect opportunity yesterday and today."

"It's obviously gone very well."
