Career best for Hendry

Career best for Hendry

05/23/2010 10:08:16 AM

New Zealander Michael Hendry enjoyed the best result of his career when he shot a closing three-under-par 69 to finish fifth in OneAsia's SK Telecom Open with a 12-under-par total of 276.

Andrew Tschudin posted a 74 to share seventh place at nine-under and finish as the top Australian in Seoul.

Korean Bae Sang-moon, 23, shot a 67 in fierce winds to win with a 22-under total, three ahead of 22-year-old Kim Dae-hyun (73) and seven-time PGA Tour winner K.J. Choi (67).

Michael Wright was Australia's second-best performer after a closing 68 vaulted him to a share of 14th on six-under, one ahead of Henry Epstein (73), who tied for 18th.

Scott Arnold had a 76 to fall back to three-under and a tie for 24th. One shot behind were Anthony Summers, who bogeyed three of the last five holes to shoot a 75, and Brad Kennedy (76), one of the first-round leaders.

Hendry, who shot six birdies and three bogeys, has been in a rich vein of form and also won last week's Muriwai Open in New Zealand, his second straight win on the Charles Tour.

"I'm really happy. This is the best result of my career," said Auckland-based Hendry, who tied for 10th at February's Moonah Classic in Victoria.

"I had a new coach in December 2008 and I feel like I've been playing really well since March 2009, so I can't say I'm surprised. I just thought it was a matter of time."

Tschudin, who has been playing much of his golf on the Korean Tour since 2008, bogeyed one, three, five and nine, but bounced back with birdies on 13 and 18, both par-fives.

"It's funny, but I didn't feel like I played badly on the front nine, then found myself four-over, so it was good to turn it around a bit. It has been a great week and I feel like a good result like this in a big tournament has been lurking for a while," the 37-year-old said.

"All parts of my game have been pretty solid this week. I've been driving well and hitting a lot of fairways, which has made things easier," added Tschudin, who has won three Hooters Tour events and the 2008 SBS Lake Hills Open in Korea.

Wright, who played in the British Open in 2006 and 2009, birdied holes two, seven, 10, 13 and 15. A bogey on 12 was the only blot on his scorecard as he finished strongly following earlier rounds of 71, 71 and 72.

The 36-year-old was one of the few golfers to relish the sight of the inclement weather as he climbed the leaderboard and followed up a joint 11th placing at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open two weeks ago.

"I was licking my lips when I saw the weather forecast. The wind is fine for me, as I have a low ball flight," said Wright, a two-time winner on the Von Nida Tour in 2005.

"I still felt I left a few out there, but I'm happy with my form. I played steady golf the first three rounds, but my putter let me down a little. Things have started to fall into place the last few weeks, so now I'm looking forward to the Indonesia Open in July."

Epstein, who shared the first-round lead with a 66, had three birdies and four bogeys in his final
