NZ to be Spur'd on

NZ to be Spur'd on

Auckland crowds will be able to get a glimpse of Tottenham Hotspur's latest signing when New Zealand tackle Jamaica at Mt Smart Stadium.

Defender Ryan Nelsen will fly down to New Zealand fresh from signing with Harry Redknapp's men to lead his country in his 46th international appearance.

Nelsen joins a high-quality lineup for their clash against the world No.52 Jamaica, who lie fifth in the CONCACAF zone at present.

The match has extra significance given New Zealand will play the fourth-placed nation in the CONCACAF region in a home-and-away series should they advance past the latter two stages of FIFA World Cup qualifying.

The team will be without, however, the man whose header against Bahrain saw them enter their second World Cup in South Africa two years ago.

Rory Fallon's omission comes from having scored just four goals from 15 games for Aberdeen, and he is replaced by former Team Wellington striker Dan Keat, who now plies his trade alongside David Beckham Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS.

At the other end of the scale, heavily experienced defender Ivan Vicelich could find himself playing his 74th international after he was named in the squad of 18.

Fellow defenders Nelsen, Tommy Smith and Winston Reid - both of whom have scored in matches for Ipswitch Town and West Ham respectively - have made the grade, as has Wellington Phoenix stalwart Ben Sigmund.

Bristol City's Chris Wood could find himself in Fallon's position, with the lanky striker looking the most likely goalscoring threat for the Kiwi team given his hot form for Birmingham and Bristol. Shane Smeltz is also looking to transfer some good form from the A-League to the international scene.

The midfield is a contentious issue, with Michael McGlinchey and Tim Brown likely to contest for the central midfielder's role. The struggling form of Marco Rojas and Leo Bertos hasn't deterred coach Ricki Herbert from naming both in the squad alongside Keat and Jeremy Brockie.

Herbert told reporters it was a tough team to name.

"I don't think a New Zealand coach has ever named a team where so many overseas pros have been left out and it has certainly been a hard squad to whittle down to just 18 players.

"We've got players who performed at the World Cup, and others have forced their way in with their form for club or country in the time since then. It's a squad we think can send a message to CONCACAF."

Herbert said he was using the match to analyse some youngsters ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with Keat in particular likely to receive plenty of attention.

New Zealand play Jamaica at Mount Smart Stadium on February 29.

New Zealand squad:
Goalkeepers: Jake Gleeson, Mark Paston. Defenders: Tony Lochead, Ryan Nelsen (captain), Winston Reid, Ben Sigmund, Tommy Smith, Ivan Vicelich.
Midfielders: Leo Bertos, Jeremy Brockie, Tim Brown, Dan keat, Michael McGlinchey, Marco Rojas. Forwards: Kosta Barbarouses, Chris Killen, Shane Smeltz, Chris Wood.

EPL-The Final Day

What a day it was; Manchester City had the title, then lost it, then had it again. Bolton were safe, then just as quickly they were gone. Arsenal secured their place in next season's Champions League, while fourth-placed Tottenham must wait until Sunday morning to see whether they will join them or not.
