Inter suffer Novara shock

02/12/2012 06:53:29 PM

Struggling Novara have shocked Inter Milan for the second time this season through an historic 1-0 win at the San Siro courtesy of Andrea Caracciolo's curling finish.

The Serie A battlers won their third match of the season despite going down to ten men when Ivan Radovanovic was sent from the field with ten minutes remaining.

Playing largely on the break, Novara took some time to threaten Inter, who welcomed back Wesley Sneijder, Dejan Stankovic and Diego Forlan.

Sneijder stung the palms of Samir Ujkani from 20 yards with the first real shot of the match and saw another effort skim the post before Diego Milito could not turn the ball in at full stretch.

Novara went looking on the counter attack in the second half and took a shock lead through Caracciola on 56 minutes.

Julio Cesar was at full stretch but could not stop the ball from going in the far bottom corner.

Radovanovic almost cost Novara dearly, however, when he was sent from the field with a second yellow for petulantly kicking the ball away after Yuto Nagatomo was awarded a free kick.

Giampaolo Pazzini, Sneijder, Esteban Cambiasso and Stankovic had late efforts as Inter laid siege to Novara's goal but the visitors held on for their first Serie A away win in 56 years.

The result leaves fifth-placed Inter, six points adrift of third-placed Lazio and the final Champions League position as Novara remain bottom of the table.

Elsewhere, Pablo Barrientos netted a quick-fire double in the second half as Catania (14th) beat Genoa (10th) 4-0.

Franscesco Lodi converted a seventh-minute penalty after Alejandro Gomez was fouled before Barrientos added a second, and soon a third from Gonzalo Bergessio's quick pass on the break.

Bergessio rounded out the scoring following Barrientos' 49th and 52nd minute strikes to fire past the goalkeeper in the 62nd minute.

Atalanta's (15th) scoring woes continued as they hit the post twice on their way to a goalless draw with struggling Lecce (18th).

The home side could not find a way past Julio Sergio despite hitting the woodwork twice through Guido Marilungo and Federico Peluso.Atalanta had scored only twice in the Serie A in their past five encounters.

Two matches in the Emiglia-Romagna region, between Parma and Fiorentina along with Bologna's match against Juventus, were both postponed due to the frigid conditions in Europe.

EPL-The Final Day
14/05/2012 4:41:36 PM
What a day it was; Manchester City had the title, then lost it, then had it again. Bolton were safe, then just as quickly they were gone. Arsenal secured their place in next season's Champions League, while fourth-placed Tottenham must wait until Sunday morning to see whether they will join them or not.
