Hoops back on top

Celtic scored a late penalty to defeat Motherwell 1-0 and move to the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Daryl Murphy scored his first goal for the Hoops from the spot after Steve Saunders received a straight red card for a foul on forward Shaun Maloney in the 73rd minute at Fir Park.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon made five changes from the side that lost 4-0 to FC Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday, but his new-look defence was nearly caught out when John Sutton headed wide from close range early on.

Motherwell keeper Darren Randolph was soon called into action at the other end, pulling off a brilliant save to deny Maloney, and later had to scramble to tip a deflected shot from Murphy over the bar.

After the break both sides failed to create any decent chances in what was fast becoming a scrappy affair.

However, Celtic continued to push and got their reward after Maloney raced clear on 73 minutes only to be brought down by Saunders.

The defender was given his marching orders and Murphy converted from the spot to ensure Celtic move ahead of Rangers on goal difference on top of the table.

Elsewhere, St Mirren lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with a 1-0 win at home against Hibernian.

Craig Dargo was the hero for St Mirren, poking home a goal in the 58th minute after Darren McGregor headed on a Garry Brady free kick.

Hibs dominated large parts of the match, but couldn't find a way through the St Mirren defence as the visitors were consigned to their second straight defeat.

At Tynecastle, Hearts had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Dundee United after Morgaro Gomis scored a spectacular late equaliser for the visitors.

Hearts dominated the early exchanges and after Adrian Mrowiec struck the crossbar with a header, David Templeton scored from close range to give the home side the lead.

Dundee had the chance to equalise from the spot in the second half but Hearts goalkeeper Marian Kello saved Jon Daly's penalty.

But just when it looked like Hearts would take all three points, Gomis volleyed home from 22 yards to level the match.
