Goals galore for 'Gladbach

Goals galore for 'Gladbach

08/29/2010 09:18:42 PM

Borussia Moenchengladbach ended Bayer Leverkusen's promising start to the season with a 6-3 hammering in the German Bundesliga.

Michael Ballack's Leverkusen had won four matches in a row leading into the league clash with Moenchengladbach, but the former German captain could do little as his team was brushed aside on their home turf.

Teenager Patrick Hermann scored the first of his two goals after 20 minutes to give the visitors the lead, but Leverkusen pulled one back when Swiss forward Eren Derdiyok headed home to make it 1-1.

But two quick goals just before the break for Moenchengladbach gave the visitors the upper hand, with Hermann and Dutchman Roel Brouwers both on target in the shadows of half-time.

When midfielder Juan Arango curled a superb free kick for long range it was 4-1 to the visitors and it was game over.

Arturo Vidal converted a penalty after winning it himself to give the home side a glimmer of hope, but Mohamadou Idrissou and Marco Reus added to the scoreline again for Moenchengladbach to blow the lead out to 6-2, before Stefan Kiessling scored a late consolation for Leverkusen.

In the other match, Borussia Dortmund won their first game of the season and ensured Stuttgart are yet to gain a point after a 3-1 win at the Mercedes Benz Arena.

Dortmund lost to Leverkusen in their season opener last week, but scored three first-half goals against Stuttgart to avoid any such repeat this week.

An own goal from Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz and strikes from Lucas Barrios and Mario Gotze gave the visitors a 3-0 lead at the break, and they weren't trouble in the second half despite Cacau managing to pull one goal back for Stuttgart.

The loss means Stuttgart remains one of six sides to be without a point after two matches in the Bundesliga this season.
